DRAGON BALL: UNDERSTANDING DEMONS AND THE DEMON RACE

 

Dragon Ball has introduced its viewers to several races throughout the series. Interestingly, the Demons have remained on the most mysterious races of the series. There is actually a lot of confusion when it comes to the use of the word Demon on Dragon Ball, so most viewers have failed to truly understand what they are and where they come from. The confusion can also be attributed to the translations from Japanese to English. Today we look at these mysterious creatures from the Dragon Ball series to know more about them and understand them better. 

Piccolo was the first Demon that was introduced in the series. The Demon King was the one who was killed by Goku after he has produced the egg from which Piccolo Jr. was born. However, it was later revealed that Piccolo was actually Namekian from planet Namek. He wasn’t part of the Demon race even though he was king of the Demon Clan. His children were actual members of the Demon Clan and did not resemble Namekians. It is often theorized that Piccolo can control how his children looked and he wanted his children to look more like Demons. 

The next time viewers get to hear about Demons in Dragon Ball was during the Majin Buu Saga. Majin is closest to the typical conception of a Demon that most people have. Buu was created by Bibidi and he was the only Majin in existence. However, things have changed recently but Buu is technically not a Demon since he has existed before the Demon Realm was created. 

Dabura is the first demon that the viewers are introduced to in the Dragon Ball series who comes from the Demon Realm. Although he is called the King of the Demon Realm interestingly, he is not the only one to hold this title. No other Demons from the Demon Realm are introduced to the viewers after him in the anime series. But more are seen in Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle. The only other time the viewers listen about the Demon Realm is in the episode called “Goku Goes to the Demon Land,” in which Princess Misa is rescued by Goku from Shula. 



However, the existence of the Demon Realm Race is mostly limited to Dragon Ball video games. They are skilled magicians who have the skin of various colors and some can even transform themselves in various forms. Several characters in the game can achieve a Dark Form while others can even get Demon God Form. These highly active states allow them to excel in martial arts, swordsmanship, and magic. The games make it clear that it considers Demon Realm Core People, the same race as Kais. The similarities between the two races are quite obvious.

It is evident that the title “Demon” is just thrown around for characters that seem evil. Even characters from the Demon Realm are called the Demon Realm Race. Fortuneteller Baba Saga of Dragon Ball had a character named Devilman, who wasn’t a Demon but from the race of Devils. Even Evil aliens have been referred to as Demons in several instances. So, it seems that there isn’t a pure Demon race after all. It is just a catchall term used for evil entities in the series
